In 2007, Cone was retained by a Fortune 50 company to develop their first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. To define the scope of the report, Cone conducted an internal and external issues assessment, which involved company interviews and extensive research. This process enabled Cone to identify the most material issues of relevance to the company and its stakeholders. It also helped clarify strengths and gaps in the company’s CSR performance.
The content developed for the CSR Report focused on the company’s material issues, and included related policies, performance, and future social and environmental goals. The completed report, published in May 2008, provides stakeholders with a clear understanding of the company’s CSR initiatives, activities, accomplishments and future commitments.
Leveraging the outcomes of the CSR reporting process, the company worked with Cone to advance its social and environmental strategies. For example, the company determined it needed to create an Environmental Council that will be responsible for directing its sustainability and environmental initiatives. Cone provided recommendations for the composition and key responsibilities of the Council as well as developed the initial framework for a comprehensive environmental strategy. Cone also developed the company’s Environmental Commitment Statement, which articulates its vision for fostering a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the entire enterprise.
Cone continues to counsel this company on its issues management and on the evolution of its CSR strategy and commitments.
